Summer Break, a show of two and three-dimensional mixed media artworks, poetry, and spoken word opens at JCC Harlem on Tuesday, June 12. Summer Break begs us not to forget, as we approach the summer holiday, what it means to be a student in America in 2018. Through installation, interactive works, 2D artworks and performance, this exhibition examines issues that have broken the essence of effective, nurturing education. Seven visual artists and a dozen spoken word artists present a variety of perspectives, some pulling from their days as young students and others as educators in the current environment.
Summer Break is the fourth in a series of semi-annual exhibitions produced by Art In FLUX at JCC Harlem. All exhibitions are open to the public and expand the cultural and community conversations that are part of the JCC daily programming. The opening night of Summer Break on June 12 will feature spoken word artists invited by Deborah Oster Pannell. The poets will respond to the Summer Break curatorial statement and the artworks in the exhibition. Performances will be every half hour starting at 6:30 pm.

About JCC Harlem:
JCC Harlem is a community space on West 118th Street that is welcome to all. An initiative of Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan in collaboration with UJA-Federation of NY, JCC Harlem creates unique and diverse access points to Jewish and communal life for members of the Harlem community. We are an institution that is at once both intentionally Jewish and committed to facilitating experiences between those who identify Jewishly and those who identify otherwise—in service of connecting, growing, and learning within an ever-changing Jewish landscape.
